2004 Club Championship

The Staff at Songbird Hills again wish to thank all of the golfers for participating in the ninth annual Club Championship and wish a hearty congratulations to all of the winners!

Day 1 of the Championship was familiar territory for David Wagner, who shot a 71 to take an early 5 stroke lead going into the second round. It was also quite familiar to the golfers trying to keep up with him!

For the third year in a row David brought home the title of Men’s Club Champion with a fantastic performance of 3-over-par 143 for two rounds.

In winning 2nd Place, Eric Gissal was doing his best on Day 2 to make up some ground, firing a 71. It was the low round of the day, but Eric just couldn’t overcome the 8-stroke advantage Wagner had. Steve Evan finished 4 more strokes back at 154 to take third place honors.

The tightest competition ever in the Men’s A-Flight was thrilling to watch from start to finish. There were only 4 strokes separating 9 golfers in the flight after Day 1. The results after Day 2 weren’t much different! Tom Breines, with rounds of 82 and 81 (163) won the A-Flight by 1 stroke over Bob Morgan (164), and by 2 strokes over Doug Braden (165).

1st Place in the Men’s B-Flight went to Pete Hornburg. Pete, with a 88 in round 1, shot 3 strokes better in round two to beat out Ronnie Brown by just 1 stroke. Coming in at third place was Don Yorde who had a 181 two-round total.

Carol Koopman, not to be outdone by Men’s Club Champion David Wagner’s 3rd victory in a row, went on to win the Ladies Club Championship for the FIFTH time in a row in 2004! She shot 90 in the first round, for a 3 stroke lead over Sue Jurgens. Sue came back on Day 2 to within 1 stroke of Carol, but that is how it stayed. Carol finished with a 178 total, edging out Sue’s 179 by just that 1 stroke. One of the closest finishes in years! Congratulations, Carol!
